99 CH14 Commnad Pro, noisey

Recommended Posts

Jerry Lee

I just picked up 1999 314-8, it runs great, about 650 hours, but the engine is noisey. No knocks, just noisey down in the crankcase area. First one of these OHV engines so don't know what to expect. Did a oil and filter change using 10w30.  Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Bad pto bearing?

It doesn't matter if the pto is engaged or not, so I don't believe it's that , but thanks. Don't know if it helps or not, it's kind of a rattley gravely sound, if that makes any sense. And it is inside the crankcase, using a stethescope.

Bad balance gear? I don't know If the OHV had these problems, but it was the Kohler K and M-series weakness

The CH singles were kinda noisy, i think it was the cam gear teeth pitch, they also had hydraulic lifters that could bleed down or get clogged and cause a tick...i have a CV23 that if it shuts off with one lifter under pressure it sounds like a rod is about to fly out for about 3 minutes.

I kinda wondered about the balance shaft, but I see that they are a totally different design than the K & M's. I also wondered about being that it is an aluminum block if it transferred more noise. But I just was looking for some input before I tear this thing all apart and find out that it is normal.

Another point, on startup and shut down you will usually hear the loudest compression release chatter of any small engine.  People used to bring these back to the shop new thinking something had come apart inside.

alloy blocks are often more silence, the softer metal absorbers more of the noise.

In reference to Red-Z06 comment about compression release rattle. When I bought the tractor, the guy told me that sometimes when you go restart it, it acts like the battery is almost dead. It doesn't want to roll over. So he shut it off and sure enough when he tried to restart, it wouldn't roll over. So he took the spark plug out and spun it over a few times with the starter. Put the plug back in and it started right up. So I wonder if maybe the spring came unhooked or broke on the compression release and that is what's making the noise? What do you think?

Not likely, it either works or it doesn't, if its failed then its at full compression all the time and the starter could have 2000 amps behind it, its not going to kick over. Possibly a failing lifter collapsing, this would give the effect of reduced compression release.

They have hydraulic lifters?

Yes.  Command CH/CV twins and singles used a net lash valve train with full pressure lubrication at all journals and hydraulic flat tappet lifters.
