There's some good info here.

And some here.

Seems to be that if the basic structure is solid and the magnets aren't broken they're rebuildable.

Possibly only needing a good thorough cleaning.

Sounds like you have the "K" series (18-20hp) and not the "KT"??

I dont recall seeing a 'kit', but parts are available - most likely be brushes, bendix (most common) or the nose oilite bushing and they are relatively easy to do a rebuild. ALERT!! you will HAVE to make a fixture to re-install/compress springs on the brush plate! I have a pic some where but cant find it ......

Have you taken the starter off yet? The K's are rather a booger, you have to take all the tin off and the flywheel, there is one of the tins behind the flywheel that covers the 3 bolts on the starter.

Any particular proper/recommended procedure for removal of the flywheel?

Found a guy on youtube rebuilding a kt17 engine , looks like a puller is the best plan... have got some brushes ordered so hopefully Charley chunk will be up and running again very soon (she named it that not me )

Hmmmm...no, basically you have to remove tin 'A' to get to tin 'B' and 'B' to get 'C' etc. Thats why you have to get the fly wheel off - to get to that last tin.

I'm fortunate enough to have a 3/4" impact driver and I use it to get the nut off the fly wheel and then a 'steering wheel' type puller - usually with a couple 'whacks' with a BFH to break it loose.

Super awesome.

Thank you.

I have a steering wheel puller here. I'll take a poke at the K582 with that.

I hope the op noticed in the video the starter motor is already off in the video before he pulls the flywheel.

My memory isn't perfect and my KT17s are in winter sleep mode but i really do not believe yo have to remove the flywheel.  You do need to put some tape on the starter housing to make sure the end cap doesn't come off as you pull it out.  You can access the two bolts from the PTO side of the engine.

I have never removed a KT17 starter so my description was ONLY for the K482/K532
