Hi, it's great to be back on the forum again its been quite awhile.

I recently scored very well on a  704 that's been stored in a machine shop for 30 years and around 10 years in a barn. The unit and mowing deck are in excellent  condition and all original including the tires with no etching at all. The k161 however had been removed in the past few years and sitting in a box with outer tins, carb and flywheel remove.

All bolts tagged and bag as to where removed from.

After looking through the parts I noticed there's no dipstick in the box.

This being my first round  hood and coming to realize the hoods are fixed and don't lift open were these tractors with the K161 built without dipsticks therefore meaning you have to remove a plug to fill and check oil level?

Not sound ignorant I just don't know.

There is a square head pipe plug on top of the block - same side as the muffler. unthread it and the dipstick is part of it.

Note - when checking the oil level, do not thread it in - merely place the dipstick into the hole and rest the underside of the plug on the block.

Welcome back. I scored a nice 704 earlier this summer as well. How about posting some pictures because as you may remember

...Hmmm.... the 704 has a different hoodstand and the hood is truly captured bt the steering shaft like some earlier models - removal of the steering wheel is required for major service

Huh...guess ive never seen a 704 in person but i figured they were like my 702 with the aluminum tank

Nope - the hood wraps around the steering shaft - you see all TOO many hoods on these that are cut  to allow easy removal - that kills the price of the hood - unless they have the cut piece - NOT!!

But wouldn't that require cutting the hood. I wouldn't want to do that.

I sure will post some pics just as soon as I figure out how to do it. Lol

I've tried several times and have yet to figure it out

I totally agree with you on that. I prefer keeping it original as well.
