ebinmaine 70,837 #1 Posted December 17, 2021 Does anyone have a rough idea what Kohler engine Bendix type starters will interchange? Small blocks to big blocks? Single cylinders to twins? Late '60s, early '70s to the later '70s, early '80s? Is it just a matter of verifying the number of teeth on the gear?
rmaynard 15,935 #2 Posted December 17, 2021 K-series 10 thru 16 HP are interchangeable. 8 HP is a different mount. After that I am clueless. 1
pacer 3,176 #3 Posted December 17, 2021 The big twins are totally different --- youre big one is probably like the 18-20's hp. And, pretty obviously the Onans are different.

I'm not going to know what I need until I get in there so I was hoping to borrow the starter off of the 12 HP. Sounds like that should be okay so that might give me out of trouble... stevasaurus 23,089 #5 Posted December 17, 2021 If it is a "High Mount" starter on the 16, I have a thread on "High Mount" starters. Look in the Reference Section / Engines. K-241 starter teardown. 1

I believe that's the thread I followed a few years ago to clean out my other C160's starter as well.
pacer 3,176 #7 Posted December 17, 2021 I've only had 2 starters to FAIL, on both the bendix, but I have went into several as a ck on a recent buy. It would appear that there are 1 of 3 things that will need attention -- probably most common is wear on the brushes, next would likely be the bushing/s worn, the next magnets will break, although if the magnets break then usually the starter wont turn. Course they will always benefit from a good cleaning..... Starter removal on the K twins is a real booger, all the tin has to come off, plus the flywheel! There a part of the tin family that is behind the flywheel and you cant get to the bolts with out removing the flywheel to then get to the 3 bolts that hold the starter

Course they will always benefit from a good cleaning I'm taking this one off because it has a very good quality "screaming banshee" noise going on. Exactly the same noise my other k341 was making a few years ago. When I took that one apart to clean it I had ordered the wrong rebuild kit so I was only able to replace the nose cone bushing by the gear. The other one felt basically okay and has been fine since.
