Starter Relays 522xi

Recommended Posts

buckhornbob

I have an older 522xi and have narrowed down a starting problem to the relay - it is quite rusted and corroded inside

The print on mine is

Hella 12v

4RD

960388-10

14100455

Can anyone tell me where I might get a compatible replacement in Canada.

Some USA sites advertise these but want more for shipping than the part costs.

Is there a suitable replacement from another manufacturer.

I don't know much about these and I could sure use some advice so I don't do any damage to my electrical system om the tractor.

Thanks

Bob

Does it look like this? You can find it in many cars in a junkyard. Common relay. Or any auto parts store. Napa # AR204

Looks similar. Seems like the Napa one should work.

A neighbour offered one he had in his shop (the last two pics) but I wasn't sure if the diagram was different. Also, it only fits if it is turned 90 degrees so the stamp on the top is not aligned with the other two relays.

Yes it's the same relay. The probably put the plastic cover on different. The circuitry and terminals are the same. Look at the white base. THere should be numbers to tell which blade is what numbered terminal.

@buckhornbob  in addition to getting the correct  relay , also detail check your connections , for cracked / powdery  connections , and tightly  bent / chaffed wiring . would also lightly dielectric grease  , every connection tab , good luck , pete

The 522xi uses 3 of these relays so you could swap with another to see if your diagnosis is correct.

Well, I switched every combination I could with the current three relays and the one provided by my neighbour and still could not get the tractor to start.

I was able to use a "jumper" to send power directly to the solenoid and the tractor started and ran fine.

It is getting cold up here and my shop is NOT heated so I have tried a temporary workaround.

There is power at the key switch, so I attached a wire directly from the "brown wire" lead to the solenoid.  I realize this bypasses the safety features that are connected to the brake and PTO but I can live with that until things get warmer and I can investigate those safety switches further without freezing off various parts of my anatomy.

Appreciate any words of warning and any recommendations around what areas I should check first.

Thanks for any help.

Days start to get longer after tomorrow, but I think there is a bit of a wait until they get warmer.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Bob

What are the first two numbers of your tractor serial number? That determines the model year.

This file has a drawing of just the starter circuit so you can see how it works. Makes it easy to follow.

Guessing on the model year and these pages are the same for the 522xi

Should have mentioned you need to download the file to see the individual diagrams.

In your case there are 3 relays used in the start mode. The only way to identify the relays on the tractor is to compare the wire colors going to each one of them. I usually mark the relay cover with letter to represent it's use so it is less to remember.
