Raider 12 engine reinstall

Recommended Posts

Finally ready to get the rebuilt k301 back on the Raider. Since I’m not the one that took it off I didn’t notice the the oil pan bolt holes are wider than the holes on the frame. Only 2 of the 4 holes line up. Is it possible that this engine was only mounted by two bolts on the flywheel side?  One with bolt, nut and lock washer, the other treaded up from under the frame and into the oil pan flange. Sure looks that way by the marks on the frame.

If its like one of mine there were 2 blind holes in the bottom of the pan and 2 eared holes on the pan, 4 bolts total

Wheelhorses with Kohler big blocks (10 - 16 HP) up to 1977 (?) Had 2 bolts through the block flange and 2 bolts going up through the frame into the bottom of the engine.

The shaker plate engines were used for a few years only.

Being a Raider it should be a 1968 to 1972 so it'll have no shaker plate.

Tilt your engine to the side and you will se the two threaded attachment points on the bottom of your oil pan.

My Raider 12 has two bolts up thru the frame on the flywheel side and two Jbolts up thru the oil pan ears and hooked under the frame on the pto side.

Jbolts

That could be a previous owner modification.

Any idea if your engine has ever been replaced or long block replaced?

No idea if it has been replaced, but it is not the first WH I have had that had the Jbolts like that.

Thinking I read on here they came that way??

I will try to get some pics in awhile.

Not sure if this is a P.O. mod or not. I have had two other tractors like this, and I could have sworn I seen other pics and comments about this on here.

Seems I remember this coming up in the past as well but I don't even remember what I ate for breakfast so I sure as heck don't remember those comments. 😂

If that's a factory stock Wheelhorse engine then just on the inside of that same frame rail next to the J bolts there will be another set of holes that goes up through the frame into the bottom of the block.

Sure enough tilted the engine to the side and there were the blind threaded holes, on the pto side, to mount it to the frame. No ‘J’ bolts necessary.

Thanks to one and all. It’s on the tractor now just need to finish connecting up the cables and fuel line.

I don't think so, but that is definitely a solid repair if one of the oil pain holes got stripped or damaged somehow.

Not to mention- the bolts under the frame absolutely could vibrate out (though I've never had it happen even once) and you'd never know. At least the J bolts are visible.
