Since my last post when I bought a used 414-8 (1986). Got some helpful info from this forum

tractor has been running great. I only use it for plowing snow, gravel etc  them kohlers just keep running

Now I need to replace the compression spring on the lift lever. It’s rusted and weak I think. When I pull the lever back the rod only engages halfway. I can take my finger and pull rod from bottom and it goes in the slot fully. Only way I see it is to remove the roll pin, pop in a new spring and retainer. Anyone know what size pin it is  I will get a roll pin punch. If worst comes to worst I’ll drill it out. Can always go up a size if necessary also. Or is there an easier way or another problem. I’m assuming the spring is supposed to let the rod engage in the cutout slot and lock the plow in the up position Sprayed plenty of pb blaster on it. The rod moves freely.  Thanks

Welcome back. :greetings-wavingyellow:

I don't know the size of the roll pin, sorry. Some one else should be along that can help with that. If you do wish to drill out the roll pin you will need a carbide drill bit, it's the only thing that will work. An inexpensive carbide tipped concrete bit will do the job. Run your drill speed fast and be patient it will chew it's way through.

I found a thread on a 212 model

gwest posted it was 1/8 x 1/2

there is a fastenal place not too far from me

hopefully they will have it

good point about the bit

thats all I need is to break the bit off

All of us have probably been down that road before Lol

ordered the spring from wheelhorseparts

yesterday. They didn’t have the pin

@Fishroe  you are talking about the STEERING  QUADRQNT ,LEVER pull PIN?, I do all my plow service work  , on 2  milk crates , so i can roll stool around and verify what going on , what ever you do , make it easy to look at and correct what is going on . pop off the access covers , have never replaced that spring myself , keep everything in grease / oil . you have to detail and verify that lubrication . on milk crates , that swing lever should swing that blade with out effort . also detail lube that pull rod lever , when set up on crates , the ease of operation , is exactly what you will have on the tractor. thats why  I  service them there , eliminate rust , replace with grease / lubricant . 1 crate under rear of plow frame , 1 crate, front of frame widening  area. perfect balance , local h/w has them in small pull out drawer section . detail your sloppy linkage areas , washers and spring clips , lubricant . that blade quadrant , should swing and function without effort, lube as you go , pete

@Fishroe Later today i can get you a pin size, I'm attempting to do the same on my C81.  My retainer is rust welded end and I've about decided I'm ready to get the torch out to heat the top of the lift lever to break the rust bond.

Here’s what that spring retainer looks like  some places listed it as NLA  but I got one from Pats Small Engine Wharehouse….just need to get-er-doneAE627E6A-CD6D-4B1B-B214-B6CC2E47A5FC.jpeg.66e8eb5a62525b95220a15b6d91fbf0f.jpeg

@Fishroe you got me motivated to work on my lift while I hid out in the shop supposedly working on a house project. Not to steal your thread but here’s a few pictures

I used a 1/8 carbide bit to drill out the roll pin. You have to get the rod as high as possible to just have room to drill the roll pin out over the outer handle tube

The horizontal ridge on the top of my spring retainer was rusted off so the retainer had slid down the tube a little. But it was rusted stuck to the tube inner wall. FDE09FE8-C4C3-4AD4-AFE7-D7AB71BB8B0A.jpeg.a18e615a08ee6c528f2f28f7609c2205.jpeg
I used a 3/4” then a 7/8” hole saw to chew on it and loosen it up some. 0159514A-A5C4-4484-85C0-139049BADE1E.jpeg.6ffeac30d59b4e0ca0c2273b747c45fb.jpeg63E5FE66-1B8D-44C2-902A-BA80E201F4A4.jpeg.d80e5b7804fb8984ed859188be7be34b.jpeg
Then it got cocked/wedged around the inner rod. And I used a long carbide bit burr in a dremel to chew on it until I could wiggle it out with a needle nose pliers. image.jpg.5363c39fc72790fcc75f7dcfa36e248f.jpg

I test fitted the new spring retainer and just gave it a coat of primer before I install it.
