457 Timing Advance

Recommended Posts

Snoopy11

Hey guys,

I mentioned this in the "What have you done to your Wheel Horse today" thread. But I thought it is a good idea to go into a little more detail of what I did today.

So... I have an adjustable timing flywheel on my 457... which I had previously set conservatively. I had 34 degrees of advance.

What I did, is put in 6 more degrees of advance after talking to ARC Racing a couple of days ago.

I did attempt more timing advance, however, the cylinder head temp went up WAY too high. I could run more timing advance in a competition environment, however, as a working tractor, I do not think that more advance is reliable.

Obviously, I had to rejet the carb... which I hate doing... but the end result was well worth it.

I am posting this, just in case other guys try something like this in the future with these racing engines. It can be done, but I would not go higher than 40 degrees of advance, outside of competitions.

Oh, and just in case anyone is wondering... I did change cams since my last videos, thus why its idle does indeed sound different than my previous videos.

Well, the cam and timing advance gained me around 150 rpm... which doesn't sound like much. However, the torque also increases throughout the powerband.

I would also say, it runs much smoother up through the powerband...
