414-8 governor bushing/seal

Ok, the governor seal is leaking oil, and the part number is 235476-S . It’s unavailable from Kohler and I’ve searched on eBay. Any guesses?

Oil being pushed out of the governor shaft on a single K or M series is typically caused by higher than normal crank case pressure. Like from excessive blow by on the rings or a case breather valve installed backwards. I'd first check the breather valve and make sure it's clean and installed correctly. Check that vent hose for being clogged too.

That sounds like a definite possibility! An M14, I like these.  The only vent hose on an M is the one that connects the crankcase breather to the air box, right?

Correct. Open that cover and inspect everything. My internet diagnostic guess is something is going on in there. Reed valve stuck, backwards, filter thingy clogged up or that hose clogged. Something like that.

Has it always leaked there? Just a recent thing? Any recent work done? How many hours on that engine? Is it just a new to you engine? How does it run? Any smoke when it's running?

There's no real "seal" there, it's just the bushing piece that guides the shaft. Oil has to kind of be pushed out through gap in the hole with the shaft in it for it to leak out. Maybe over filled with oil could do it too. There should be plenty of lube in that bushing but I guess it's possible for the hole to be worn too. :dunno:

Please let us know what you find, if anything. Helps the next guy!

It’s new to me. Just changed oil. The “owner before me”  had it all buggered up… welded tie rods, wrong air filter, new carb. Had a lean carb; all fixed. I’ve ordered the bushing. Ya, you are right; open up and inspect everything! That’s my next step.
