C160 8 Speed Tranny Rear Axle Bearing Replacemtn

Recommended Posts

While using my C160 with FEL last week, I noticed oil below the 8 Speed Tranny. Noticed that the right side oil seal had pop'd out causing the leak. Removed the Dually Wheels today and found alot of up and down play on the right hard side, left side was fine. Removed the tranny and when I lifed it up to put it on the bench the right hand axle needle bearing needles were actually falling out. A part of the outside portion of the bearing had broken off allowing the needles to fall out.

The Transmission Manual instructs you to secure the tranny in a vise, with the left hand side facing up, and remove the left side of the tranny. I did this and all gearing looks fine. My question is that since the problem is with the axle needle bearing of the right hand side, can I put the tranny cover back on, flip is over and lift the right hand side off, or do I have to completely disassemble it to get to the left had side bearing.

Has anyone hear of the axle bearings wearing like this?

Thanks in Advance for any Help.

That's how my bearings were also, falling right out. Normally, that's why the seals go, because the axle starts to oscilate. When this happends and it's not caught right a way, the shaft wears down quickly, and needs to be replaced. If you can check the shaft dia. for wear, it'd be a good idea. You might be back in the same boat if you don't. When you reassemble it, put the other half down first. This is nessasary because of the ball detents in the shift fork shafts. (hope I said that right). My reassembly info is based on a three/four speed tranny, not an 8-speed. Perhaps someone else can chime in also. Good luck.

I broke one pulling out some 12 ft. tall persimmon trees. I had the rear axle out didn't take it apart. I didn't have a repair manual and had to open it a second time something about the shifter, it's been 20 years so I don't remember much about it.
