414-8 3a or 15a

I have a 414-8, what I believe to be a 1986 year.  All the wiring schematics I have found show it to be a 3a charging system with a separate ac feed to the lights that only work while its running.  However, my lights work anytime even without the key.  How do I confirm what charging system I have and the correct schematic?

If it's the original engine, It should have a 15amp charging system. Does the kohler have a one of these? if so , you have a 15

amps charging system.

I am guilty of putting my headlights on a separate switch, so I can turn them on at any time.

for example doing some work at the evening,.. portable lamp and transport in one:handgestures-thumbupright:

Sounds like the headlamp wiring has been changed to be powered off the battery. The lamps should not light with the key OFF if wired correctly.

Where the wires come out of the engine tins one of them should have a diode covered with tape on the engine side of that connector. Feel that area for a 3/16" x 5/16" diode.

You should also not have a 3-wire voltage regulator. It would be mounted in the blower housing for cooling or a large aluminum finned regulator mounted on the chassis somewhere.

Post the engine spec number if you have it.

  • Thanks 1

Spec number 60440.  Here is a pic, yellow wires,  Might be a diode but much smaller.

How sorry, I thought they started using the M14 in 1986.. My bad

Do you find a heatsink somewhere?

I was thinking that but very small in size.  How else to verify without undoing heat shrink?  I was getting roughly 20vac across the 2 yellow wires at the plug with it plugged in and running.  Also, if it were 3a system, what wire would have went to the lights?  The yellow wire without the possible diode is grounded which would match the schematic I think.

Where do the3 wires go... one to the ignition switch I terminal (for the coil) one directly to the light switch (or maybe ACC on the igntion switch) the other to R or B on the ignition switch??  if so 3 amp system.

Thanks, I'll look into that.  Got sidetracked when I realized the circuit board for the indicator lights has been removed.  Wiring is there but no board.  Guessing there has been more modifications to the electrical than expected.
