Mustang67ford 234 #1 Posted November 6, 2021 Recently picked up a 414-8 with a kohler k321s. Had a dead battery so charged it up and battery voltage was 12.9v or so not running. The voltage did not change with it running so starting to troubleshoot. Here is a plug comming out of the motor. The black wire goes to the coil and the 2 yellow go to the motor. Are the 2 yellows the stator? If so, 1 is grounded out and I'm getting about 2M ohm across the 2 yellow. Or, do I have the wrong wires to check the stator? What else can I do to confirm a bad stator? Also included a pic of the other side of the plug and the regulator I believe.
peter lena 9,190 #2 Posted November 6, 2021 @Mustang67ford , might try adding a better ground to that stator mount point , like engine ground area or to battery ground mount point , use alligator wire clip test wires to enhance and verify electrical issues , mainlined that battery ground with 4 ga wire to engine corner/ frame , up to stator , up to lights , no more issues , pete

How do I check and verify the stator is ok, do I have the correct 2 wires, the yellow ones? If so, the one yellow probably shouldn't be grounded correct? pfrederi 18,562 #4 Posted November 6, 2021 Two wires are from stator should show 30 volts AC engine running.
Mustang67ford 234 #5 Posted November 6, 2021 (edited) Thanks, was getting ac voltage though more around 20vac with it running. Cleaned the plug, now getting about 16vdc at the battry while running. Glad to see that. Still confused why I seen such a large resastance across the stator wires with it unplugged and why 1 is grounded. Seems like there is a diode like the 3v system some had but my lights work with it off and key out. You can see it in the pic with the heat shrink by the plug. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,392 #6 Posted November 6, 2021 Different than what I thought you had. Two yellow wires go to the ignition coil. The relay in your 2nd picture is the low oil relay for the starter.

Yellow wires on the suspected stator end so could have been a color change.
