Guy brought me two engines this week. One is a Kohler Magnum 20, may have a bad rod.

Second one is a 24hp Briggs vertical shaft. Has a hole worn it he block from rubbing on the

mower frame. Going to JB weld that hole as long as the rods looks ok. Plugs in that one looked+

pretty good.

The Kohler is a horizontal shaft engine, will pull side plate at some point to see what it looks

like inside. Think it is a Series 2 has oil filter on it.

I used the JB to fix an annoying oil leak from a porousity in a K181 block at the casting parting line. Gouged the area wth a drill and rotary burr, cleaned it 4 times with Brakekleen and once with acetone. Packed the JB into the groove - sanded it smooth. Used a 2" x 2" aluminum screen door patch cut to a better size - coated that area on the block with JB, pushed the patch into it, and covered it with more JB. Let that harden overnight and sanded lightly. Painted the engine, changed the oil, been running it 2 years with no oil leak. Go for it!!!!

All magnum twins have full pressure lube.  bad news is you have to do a significant  tear down to even see the rods.  Pulling end plate doesn't reveal anything  (see pic).  To look at the rods you have to pull the jugs.  Depending on age they may have a gasket or the may have just RTV sealant.  To replace a rod you have to split the crankcase  

You will want to look at the Service manual.

Have used JB weld to repair a number of cracks in blocks over the years. Not real concerned about that,

not had one leak yet.

On the Kohler don't know exactly when I will even look at it. Have worked on a lot of engines over the years

just not one of these yet.  Was looking at the closure plate on the PTO side of the engine, just want to see if

anything is laying in the bottom of engine. May not work though.
