Small Ride-On Gravely Help

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

Came across this on FB last night and shot him a message. Never seen one of these before. Almost looks like a big fiberglass body.

At first, I thought it was a rear-engine. But now that I look at it, it almost looks like a front-engine, front-wheel-drive set-up.

Doesn't look like there is a deck to it, but I like the little floor-boards rather than being open like the small, 60's Wheel Horses have.

Any help or ID would be much appreciated.

That is a Gravely Westchester. They were built when Studebacker owned the company. Many of those tractors were bought back by Gravely because customer's were not happy with them. I personally would love to have one, they are so cool looking.

Here is an article on them.

Wow, very interesting. Can't imagine there are many left out there, between time and the buy-back.

Also nice to see that picture with the guy on it. The pictures I have make it look deceivingly small (like the short-frame, round-hood Wheel Horses).

EDIT: Just looked them up on google / YouTube. Looks like these have front-mount attachments (plow, mower deck), and the back tires are what turn, making it a rear-steer tractor. Very cool and unique.

If you take a close look, they are basically a walk behind tractor that they added a rear section of frame and a steer axle to. I believe that all of the walk behind attachments will fit on right on to the front of the tractor.

It looks like an early OHV Tecumseh. But I think that Gravely did make some of their own engines.

So I got a message back from the seller. The one in the picture does run. He also has a second one for parts (not shown in the pictures).

He is asking $600 for the pair. Probably worth it due to the rarity of the tractors, but a little out of my price range. Plus, I think the wife would kill me if I came home with 2 more tractors. I barely have enough room as it is now lol

EDIT: Still cool to see though. Love coming across these old gems

Interesting I would have guessed OHVs weren't till much later. Guessing they were harder/costlier to make back then they are now?

Here is a pic of an early Techy OH140 with the square can on top for the valve cover.

I used to hate working on the Gravely walk-behinds. Trying to get them up the wooden ramps into the van was a near-death experience, every time.
