Gregor 4,847 #1 Posted October 6, 2021 The post about the shallow oil pan got me to thinking. ( a bad thing I know ) 2 cycle engines do not have an oil dipper, obviously. 2 cycles run on a gas and oil mixture, and do not require an oil pan. What would happen to a K 321 running on gas/oil mix, and no oil in the pan? Anybody want to try this, in your tractor?
953 nut 59,928 #2 Posted October 6, 2021 On a two cycle engine the fuel/oil mix goes through the crankcase where it is pressurized prior to entering the combustion chamber. 35 minutes ago, Gregor said: What would happen to a K 321 running on gas/oil mix, and no oil in the pan? Gregor 4,847 #3 Posted October 6, 2021 Not in my tractor, but I think I will try to find an old 4 cycle lawn mower and give this a shot. Inquiring minds want to know!
Pullstart 66,709 #4 Posted October 6, 2021 But the fuel/oil will never reach the crank case on a 4 stroke… 1
Gregor 4,847 #5 Posted October 6, 2021 good point. Never thought of that. Might just skip this experiment.

littleredrider 409 #7 Posted October 6, 2021 Be good mosquito repellant.
WheelHorse520H 708 #8 Posted October 6, 2021 Be good me repellent too, I don’t want to be near a poorly lubricated engine. We had one come in the shop here a couple weeks ago, at my high school, and to owner forgot to put oil in it. Now if you try to run it, it makes a loud clicking and idles at the slowest speed I ever heard. Now we have to put a new engine in it. But I digress, it would repel me too. johnnymag3 2,568 #9 Posted October 6, 2021 oil in the pan will keep the lower half happy, and oil in the gas will keep the BUGS away !!!! so keep the oil in the crankcase, and feel free to run MIX in the gas !!!!
Gregor 4,847 #10 Posted October 6, 2021 Todays low ash 2 cycles oils, really don't create any smoke at all.
WHX?? 51,739 #11 Posted October 6, 2021 Put some drain oil in the gas. That'll make her smoke....
Maxwell-8 4,367 #12 Posted October 6, 2021 (edited) If you make a transferport in de cilinder where the intake off the cilinder is taking air from the crankcase. Running a Kohler on 2 stroke, would they be able to run a higher rpm? Edited October 6, 2021 by Maxwell-
ri702bill 9,407 #13 Posted October 6, 2021 Maxwell: Yup - right up to the point where the connecting rod grabs the crank journal and the rod becomes a jigsaw puzzle. Bill 1 1
Pullstart 66,709 #14 Posted October 6, 2021 Was the snowmobile Kohler a 2 stroke?
8ntruck 7,833 #15 Posted October 6, 2021 I think the Kohler snowmobile engine was a 4 stroke. The Sthil string trimmer I bought this year is a 4 cycle that does not have an oil sump. Something to do with emission laws. It runs on 2 cycle mix, so it is possible to do this. Turns out that the intake manifold is connected to the crank case in order to get the 2 cycle mix to where it needs to act as a lubricant.
