I get by with gently tap the bearing plate outward the bearing will likely stay on the crank but not always. You might have replace some gaskets behind the bearing plate if they do not come apart cleanly. there may be multiple gaskets as they are what sets the crank end play. All this should all be inthe service manual Paul has graciously provided.
Gregor 4,847 #31 Posted September 29, 2021 This is an 8 HP Kohler, with electric start. This,is what you should end up with, except yours will not have the tall dipstick. This one doesn't either, anymore. 1
Gary Ch 15 #32 Posted September 29, 2021 You guys are the besets man! I'll go get a smaller gear puller for this aluminum bearing plate now, got too many things to do, license bureau for the other car I bought. My neighbor said he would get it off the crank, but when I said those plates are $240 to replace, he kinda changed his mind
pfrederi 18,655 #33 Posted September 29, 2021 Couple pieces of 10-24 allthread and a timing gear or other puller Use the stator mount holes
squonk 43,780 #34 Posted September 29, 2021 I usually get bearing plates off with a dead blow hammer.
Gregor 4,847 #35 Posted September 29, 2021 (edited) I have never had to use a puller, but then maybe I have just been lucky. As I said, I didn't think it was even possible to install the bearing plate in that manner, and maybe in the end, it's not. Once you have it off, check it VERY CAREFULLY for cracks. Or maybe even take a close look before you take it off. Once you have the flywheel removed. Edited September 29, 2021 by Gregor
Gregor 4,847 #36 Posted October 11, 2021 I'm a little curious. Whatever happened to this motor? On 9/29/2021 at 12:18 PM, Gary Ch said:
Gary Ch 15 #37 Posted October 12, 2021 The engine is fine, I hope, its not fired up as of yet, as I'm waiting for a new bearing plate gasket to re install that plate & flywheel, noting I'll have a grass catcher screen repainted for the flywheel upon re assembly. I'm taking my time with the Wheel Horse, I just got my '63 Bonneville Safari off a semi today from Ca, its been in a shop out there since May, since I sold that house, gettin git running for me after 30 yrs idle, & I'm restoring this house, so I have a lot on my plate just now. I'll remember you and keep you posted when I get it running. Thank You for your interest........Gary
