truckin88 104 #1 Posted June 17, 2009 it looks to be coming from behind the PTO pulley to the left when you look at it head on. The previous owner said it burned oil, I think he over filled it. It did not start right away before, but I put new plugs, new air filter, new battery, starts first try now!!!
Jim_M 179 #2 Posted June 17, 2009 It sounds like it might be the crankshaft seal leaking.
jaysmith801 0 #3 Posted June 17, 2009 there is also a welch plug right above the craftshaft.
truckin88 104 #4 Posted June 17, 2009 big job??? can I get the seals?
Jim_M 179 #5 Posted June 17, 2009 I forgot about the plug, that's a very good possibility also. Pull your pt off and see if you can pinpoint where the leak is. The seals and welch plug are available.
truckin88 104 #6 Posted June 17, 2009 what about the crank case breather tube??? Whats a welch

linen beige 15 #8 Posted June 18, 2009 Whats a welch That's the "proper" name for a "freeze plug". Glad you got her going with no leaks!
lotus1967 0 #9 Posted June 19, 2009 :thumbs2: This may sound real stupid, but is the 520 a liquid cooled engine? I was unaware any Wheel Horse was liquid cooled. If wrong, I understand the Welch Plug, but if not-?????
truckin88 104 #10 Posted June 19, 2009 no air cooled, I believe the only liquid cooled would be a D-250 If it would stop raining in NY, I could test my fix out more.....
lotus1967 0 #11 Posted June 19, 2009 anybody know why, then, a welch(freeze)plug in an air cooled engine?
jaysmith801 0 #12 Posted June 19, 2009 It's right behind the rear of the camshaft probaly just for access to the cam bearings
wh500special 2,262 #13 Posted June 19, 2009 I was unaware any Wheel Horse was liquid cooled. If wrong, I understand the Welch Plug, but if not-????? Liquid cooled: D250 (4-cly Renault) 520Lxi (2-cyl Kawasaki) 523Dxi (3-cyl Daihatsu diesel) All three are awesome tractors The welch plug *might* be a plug used to remove casting sand from when the block was poured. lotus1967 0 #14 Posted June 22, 2009 both responses make sense. Thanks
linen beige 15 #15 Posted July 2, 2009 The welch plug *might* be a plug used to remove casting sand from when the block was poured. Or to plug access holes used for machining bearing surfaces, etc. Most "V" configured engines with a single, central camshaft use a welch plug as a camshaft thrust bearing. There are also small ones in most of our 'Horse's carburetors.
truckin88 104 #16 Posted July 2, 2009 It ended up being the rear bearing plate gasket, I changed it out and changed the end oil seal as well. Thanks for all the help pictures soon.
