Ken B 3,189 #1 Posted June 17, 2009 Hi guys, I'm a newbie to the forum, nicest Wheel Horse site I've ever seen. I'm looking at a GT 1600 Work Horse with the Briggs 16 on it. This is a very new type tractor to me as the newest tractor I've ever owned is a C-100. Thanks SteveBo! The GT 1600's motor is toast. I'm wondering if anyone here has dropped a K-series Kohler into one of these? If so, I'm wondering if it was a big deal. I've got so many projects already, I'm just trying too decide if I want to get involved in another one. The tractor is very clean with good mower deck. It would be nice too hear if anyone has gone down this road and how they like the Work Horse. Thanks for any input. Ken
gwgdog66 23 #2 Posted June 17, 2009 :thumbs2: I think a Kohler would fit the Work Horse, wiring will be different, depending on which Kohler you pick. Some of the other members here have experience with the Work Horse line, they can tell you for sure what can and woun't fit.

hodge 6 #4 Posted June 17, 2009 The workhorse is a good tractor, just like any other horizontal shaft WH. The Briggs is even fine- I have had absolutely no problems, and it has power out the wazoo. Other than the wiring differences, you should be able to put a Kohler in there with minimal issues. A single cylinder 16 horse kohler would be sweet in that 1600... wh500special 2,262 #5 Posted June 17, 2009 Don't forget, your Briggs will also have a 1" diameter crankshaft and has the appropriate pulley and bearing race for that size (also has the thrust bearing on the back of the transmission drive pulley). All the 10+ HP Kohlers and Onans had 1.125" cranks. You'll either need to get a new pulley - which are readily available on eBay all the time - or find an engine with a 1" diameter crank. Sounds like a perfect candidate for a diesel to me since you already have all the parts... Steve
Ken B 3,189 #6 Posted June 18, 2009 Thanks for the input guys. My idea is to make a possible puller out of it and or a winter plow tractor so I wouldn't be running any attachments. It has a pretty nice mower deck which I 'd probably sell too help with the cost of the tractor. If the parts aren't too pricey, I might even overhaul the Briggs. Looks like I'll be doing some Horse haulin this weekend.
