Fordiesel69 268 #1 Posted September 17, 2021 Got a john deere HS50 engine on a snowblower with no spark and it looks like I see a points wire under the flywheel. Asssuming it has points, can I simply unbolt the flywheel and magneto from an MTD HSSK50 and slap it on?
Achto 28,832 #2 Posted September 18, 2021 Don't know the answer but I'm chiming in to learn. Have you considered using a Nova module to replace your points? https://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Transistorized-Ignition-Module-Nova/dp/B007BI6FW6/ref=asc_df_B007BI6FW6?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80745437134316&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584345015816909&psc=
Fordiesel69 268 #3 Posted September 20, 2021 I will answer this as I couldn't wait for the answer. Tecumseh thankfully has a very good robust point setup under the flywheel, and the actual magneto is under the flywheel too unlike the briggs. I forgot about that. There is no place to mount a breakerless mag onto an engine that used points. You simply clean the existing points and rock on. With a briggs, you rip off the magneto, cut the wire going to the points, and bolt the new magnetron coil in place of the old one. Did it many times back in the day. That and a fresh fuel diaphram in the carb made them start in 3-4 pulls which was good for back then.
