Pinions are the small gears inside the differential which is surrounded by what's known as The Bull gear. The main drive gear. Horse transmissions have either 4, 8, or 10, pinion gears. Eight pinion transmissions are known to be the strongest because you have larger gears than the 10 pinion transmissions and obviously more of them than the four pinion transmissions so it gives you twice the contact surface to transfer power. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
