Odd RJ-58 (New Pics Added)

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

Looking at an RJ-58 (at least I think thats what it is) on FBM.

I'm almost positive it is an RJ-58, as in one pic, I can just make out "RJ-58" on the frame tag, but can't read the serial number.

Whats odd (to me) about it is the drive drivetrain. The engine is definitely not a K90 or K91, which makes me think Clinton (assuming it's original). And on the right side, there is a chain and a 3-step pulley on what looks like the input shaft of the transmission. I've never seen that before.

Seat is solid, no holes, which if I recall correctly is an early seat (please correct me if I'm wrong, going off memory).

Is this an early RJ with some kind of set-up I've never seen?

Thanks!

Pics are required but if there's a drive chain from the engine it's a modification. Solid seats on later 59s and early 1960 suburbans

Pics inspired a lot of questions. Not much shown on the engine / drivetrain. You can see the tag on the left side of the engine pic, and the chain / stepped pulley can be seen if you look close on the rear-end shot.

I also thought the recoil looked odd in the engine, like it was adapted from a different motor. Maybe thats just how they were, I'm no RJ expert.

It is an RJ. Anything that bolts on may have been changed by a previous owner over the past 63 years. It sounds like a centrifugal clutch or some options for speed selection may have been added to the engine.

The stepped pulley on the transmission is definitely not original, and the chain guard is homemade.  it can be put back to original if desired, but the original belt guards are hard to find $$, There are some nicely made copies of the belt guards on E-bay  from time to time.

Couple more pics. Looks like it is a Clinton 1290, so my guess was right. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I can make out a serial number.

Any help would be appreciated, RJs are not my Forte. Looks like its all there, and the seller said it ran at one time, but has been in a shed for the past 5 years.

Hard to tell if the Clinton was original (though it looks to be the correct engine), and there are obvious issues like the seat, the odd cable attached to the lift handle, the unusual drive chain / pulleys.
