Ifixoldjunk 778 #1 Posted August 1, 2021 Hi, I have a 1988 wheel horse 310-8. This morning when I went to cut the grass I noticed the battery was dead. I hooked it to my battery charger and let it sit for a while. Anyways I got sidetracked and ended up coming back to the tractor hours later. I've since replaced the battery but the tractor will only start if I jump the solenoid. This solenoid is only a few months old so I don't belive that's the issue. does anyone have any clue what's going on here? I'm pretty much a dummy when it comes to electrical stuff. Did I fry something leaving it on the charger too long? Anything helps, I need this tractor running ASAP.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,391 #2 Posted August 1, 2021 Have a test light or multimeter? The starter circuit has it's own diagram.
squonk 43,361 #3 Posted August 1, 2021 You should receive 12 volts at the little wire on the solenoid while the switch is in the crank position. if you aren't look for a bad wire to and from switch, switch itself blown fuse or a safety switch in the crank circuit. There is a 25 A fuse between the battery and switch
8ntruck 7,663 #4 Posted August 1, 2021 If you do happen to find a blown fuse, you need to ask yourself why the fuse blew. If you don't fix why the fuse blew, you are likely to blow more.
953 nut 59,250 #5 Posted August 1, 2021 The number one cause of won't start issues is the PTO being in the ON position, check it out. Trust me, we have ALL done this! Another thing to look at is the battery hook-up, "-" to ground, "+" to the solenoid.
Ifixoldjunk 778 #6 Posted August 7, 2021 So I’ve finally found time to dig into wheel horse issues. I’ve replaced the solenoid and it still won’t start. It’ll run normally if I jump the solenoid still. I’ve come to the conclusion that I may need a new key switch. Issue is I cannot find the right switch anywhere. it appears to have 6 connections but I’ve only ever seen them with 5 connections. If it helps mines a 1988 310-8. I’ll post the model number too. If anyone has a parts number please post it.😅
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,391 #7 Posted August 7, 2021 Ignition switch is on this wiring diagram. Click on the picture in the link to see it.
