12-32 XL Old Starter Parts ID Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Doug_H

I recently bought a Wheel Horse 12-32 XL tractor mower sn 220010329.  The starter is pretty loud and I was considering replacing it.  I think it should be pn 457595. Then when I looked closer I noticed it is missing the pinion gear spring on the starter drive.  Maybe I only need the drive kit (pn 695708?), but the replacement parts look different than my starter drive.  Mine attaches with a roll pin not a C-clip (see attached photos). The guy I bought it from told me he had replaced the engine but I think the starter is still the same as original pn 457505.  My problem is when I look at pictures of the Briggs OEM replacement for the drive kit it has the C-clip attachment.  Are parts available for my starter or do I need the whole starter just for the missing spring?

Thanks in advance,

Doug

Thanks. Section 7 on starters helped. My style starter is shown on page 12 figure 20 and also page 29 figure 55. It appears that that vintage starter does not have a return spring. I couldn’t really determine a part number for a replacement starter. Mine still works but if I need to replace it do I just get one with the same length housing and a 16 tooth nylon gear?  I think that would still be pn 497595.  Earlier in error I wrote it was pn 457595.

Regards,

Doug

Do you have the B&S numbers off your engine. Will look like 284707-1148-E1.

Thanks.  I think that confirmed that I would need the 497595 replacement.  Or Briggs new number that supersedes it 394805.

Doug
