520H Wont Start

Tractor turns over great - When turning over the headlights will cut off and the volt meter goes to zero like the battery was suddenly disconnected but it continues to turn over fine at full power ?

all lights on the dash come on when turned to on.

where should I start troubleshooting? Fuses are all good and connections at fuse block look good

Welcome to the forum.

It is correct that headlights and volt meter are off during cranking (why waste juice on them until then engine is running?) and dash lights on (briefly) when switch is ON.

Do you have the manual for your year/model (search in the manuals section for something like "tractor 520-H" and switch on "use all search terms")

Is it starting to fire up and then not catching?

Is it not even trying to start?

Is the PTO lever disengaged?

Is the motion control lever securely in neutral?

If it is cranking, but not starting then the problem is either fuel or spark.

Has fuel? Fuel petcock open? If a clear fuel filter, can you see fuel passing through? Smell fuel in exhaust after trying to start?

Has spark? (Best to use a spark tester)

getting fuel as i can smell it

all levers are in correct position

i had the lights on just to see if they dimed or not but they cut clear off as does the voltage meter so i assume it must be electrical someplace

As Don said, lights are turned off while cranking.  A quick test for spark is to simply lay a spark plug against a metal part of the engine with a spark plug wire attached, then crank while watching for spark.
