andrewLL 19 #1 Posted July 25, 2021 Hi, hoping someone can help. I have a 1972 Raider 12 which has been giving me problems for a few years now, gently popping and back firing, gradually loosing power then stopping after about 40 minutes use. I assume it is heat related but just left it to cool down then finished cutting the grass. I have now replaced plug, points and condenser and the coil is nearly new. I also checked the valve clearances which measured 0.0025” In, and 0.016” exhaust. These have been set to 0.009” and 0.018” I then fired her up and ran for five minutes to warm the oil before draining, here I only drained 900ml which is about half of what should be in there. The dip stick was showing full. I have refilled with 1 litre of straight 30 oil and it is showing as full. Any ideas on what the oil capacity is, the manual indicates much more? I intend to run her tomorrow and see if the original problem has been cured, it’s nice and hot here in SW France at the moment. Thanks, Andrew

If the crank case is half full of solids and you don't have enough oil it could be your problem. Disconnect the fuel line, choke and throttle cables and all wires as needed then remove the four bolts that connect the engine block to the oil pan. Now you can remove the engine and clear the oil pan of accumulated gunk.
520HC 208 #3 Posted July 26, 2021 should hold 2 quarts of oil.
andrewLL 19 #4 Posted July 30, 2021 Hi, thanks for your suggestion. That’s a lot of solid muck, but the logic is good and I can’t think what else would reduce the oil capacity. It’s nearly fifty years old now so a little each year may do it. I will let you know what I find, but poking some wire down the filler neck did not produce anything. rjg854 12,175 #5 Posted July 30, 2021 How long have you owned this tractor? This may be a long shot, but could some one over the years replaced the dipstick with one from a different tractor. I have no idea if all dipstick lengths are the same or not. Just my I'm probably off base, but if the oil pan is clean, that's my best GUESS.
