Help with my C-160

Recommended Posts

Berny

Hello!

My grandpa bought me a C-160 at auction it has the Tecumseh OH-160 motor. I'm working on getting it running. I've replaced the spark plug and starter. I removed and cleaned the carburetor and new gaskets in it. I adjusted the carb and governor. I adjusted the valve clearance and ignition pin gap. Compression test says 90psi.

It still isn't running very well, it will stutter, almost stall, then pick up and save itself. That repeats every 5 seconds or so. It's also dripping oil out of the breather tube. I think the guy before me may have put too much oil in so I'm going to change it and make sure the proper amount is in it. I'll link some videos that will give a sense of the problem. I managed to score a mower deck for it, and I really want to mow my back field. Any and all advice is much appreciated. Thank you so much! I want so much for my tractor to run properly.

Definately overfilled on oil! After that see what it does and move to carbureator adjustment if needed.

According to the Lubrication Chart it should hold 2 quarts same as the Kohler. Click on the fuzzy picture to view the charts.

Thank you! I'm changing the oil now. Weirdly enough I found a Tecumseh manual that listed the oil capacity at 52oz, just over 1.5 quarts. Maybe I'll start with that and adjust based on the dipstick.

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll keep it updated!

Edit: I got SAE 30, as indicated by the manual, but it is asking for API "SE" or "SF" oil. Mine is "SP, SN, SN plus, SM, or SL" but after some research it looks like it will work. If anyone has information to the contrary please advise.

There's a thread on here that's active lately. Discusses oil and it's properties.

You really should have an older designation oil such as SJ.

What you have is fine for now.

Check out that thread and you'll learn a ton of info.

Congrats on your C160!!

Definitely a bucket list tractor for many folks.

That Tecumseh engine makes it an uncommon one. Produced 1974 ONLY and just a few hundred at most.

I have one here for a future restoration project.

Thank you!

I think I just saw some toro SJ oil at the hardware store. Dang, I should have got it. I'll check out that thread. I will get it running and use it for a couple months then maybe change it again and put SJ in it.

Use Rotella T1 30W.  You won't regret it.  Read through the "Oil" thread that Eric mentioned to understand why.

You can get it at Walmart for $16 a gallon.

SJ is an older formulation that does in fact have more Zinc than the newer SN but I guarantee that Toro oil will be more than $4 a quart!

That Tec  OH160 has internal counterbalance shafts and weights (like dummy crankshafts) - that someone may have mis- lined up post rebuild. They're not real obvious or intuitive to get right. Will give fits if out of whack. Good heavy built engine worth work imo. And free online service manuals are a good idea.

Is the reed valve in breather backwards causing cranckcase pressure? I have found lots of unusual stuff from previous fixers.

Some of the Tecumseh engines had a breather that could be cleaned and reinstalled.

There's pin holes that must be on the bottom as installed on the engine so the oil will drain.
