AHS 1,524 #1 Posted July 5, 2021 It runs, but the spark plug wire is toast! The coil plastic is melted. Throw the plastic away? What does the plastic mean? The muffler is toast at the the inlet port… could the hot exhaust be the melted plastic piece? I know it’s a long shot… I did not do this! This 312 has been hacked up for a long time! peter lena 9,188 #2 Posted July 5, 2021 @AHS, coils are easily available on line or on this site, also sounds like that hot exhaust leak could be the cause of the problem. another detail on your rebuild, is to enhance the engine to grounding points. like engine / frame to battery rail ground area . would also go after every electrical point , with a wire brush touch up and dielectric grease . my personal experience with the magnum electric set up ,is the way to go , once electrical / ground are secure , its bullet proof . pete
JoeM 8,164 #3 Posted July 5, 2021 If it runs with that wire like that just insulate the wire. Not sure what caused the melting. That area has the most air flow and from the flywheel fan. Was the head fins clogged???? Not sure. That plastic piece is an air baffle. It is used to direct the air properly through and around the cylinder head. Need to replace it or repair with some tin. It sticks up pretty high.
