edgro 680 #3 Posted June 27, 2021 I was going to do something like that, instead decided to spend the bucks for the trailer type sprayer with the booms. First season out in the country, never seen so many dandelions in my life. Right now we're overrun with toadstools

kpinnc 14,705 #6 Posted June 28, 2021 I have a towed sprayer with the folding arms like that. They are awesome! Kinda wish mine mounted on the tractor like that.
ohiofarmer 3,379 #7 Posted June 28, 2021 (edited) I just took an old MTD frame and mounted a 100 dollar sprayer from Rural King on it . The sprayer came with a big trigger gun of some quality with plenty of hose. All i had to buy to make a spray boom was a piece of plastic electrical conduit and a few spray tees and elbows.I used air injection spray tips for zero drift. Probably $115 total. I repurposed an old MTD tractor frame and rear end and strapped the tank on with a ratchet strap. the whole thing breaks down and can be hauled in a car trunk. BUT WAIT! Just like the infomercials, the same sprayer can be bought for 59.99 til July 4th. https://www.ruralking.com/weeklyad Its on page 4 Edited June 28, 2021 by ohiofarmer

ronhatch 406 #9 Posted June 28, 2021 I wish a couple of my neighbors would spray their so called 'lawns' for weeds! Of course they would be left with bare dirt but I don't think they care. Why do people buy homes with large yards and never step outside, much less mow the lawn or trim the trees and bushes or even pick up broken branches laying in the lawn. Just lazy. Same for me, my house property is woods on one side and open meadows on the other side, that the rancher grazes cattle on. I'm not on city water, but a well. So I don't use chemicals on my lawn for obvious reasons. So long as it's green and mowed it's good to go.

I never go over strength with the stuff. We calibrate the sprayer according to manuals and formulas by catching spray from one tip and calculating , but in your yard, i would suggest this method..Mount up your spray bar and just use water to spray out a measured amount of water, say five or ten gallons. Measure the amount of area you cover with that amount of spray in square feet and divide by 43500. Let's say you cover 23250 feet with ten gallons. That is a half acre. When I read the directions on the spray bottle, it says a pint per acre, so i would mix eight ounces per ten gallons. But the example will vary by how fast you drive and two or three variables on your spray rig There are two kinds of 2-4-D. Amine and Ester. Take your pick. Do not be impatient. it will take several days to see results. if you are using so much strength in your spray that a fast kill happens, the leaves gets burned off and the weed will come back. So wait a week, If the leaves have not started to turn mottled brown, spray once more. It took my yard three full weeks to achieve maximum kill, and all I need now is a few areas spot sprayed because of stubborn weeds that became very established in the past. Farmers get the blame for a lot of algae blooms and spray pollution, but the lions share of it is caused by over lawn fertilization and very strong application rates trying to achieve that perfect surburban lawn. I would suggest that if you are killing white clover with your weed spray, it is way too strong. Edited July 2, 2021 by ohiofarmer
ronhatch 406 #14 Posted July 4, 2021 (edited) I only spot spray my lawn and flower beds with Weed-B-Gone using a 1 gal pump sprayer or a used spray bottle that my wife gave me. I occasionally walk around my 3/4 acre lot and spray those little SOB's. I do apply a fertilizer with pre-emergences in the early spring and the rest of the time I just use regular lawn fertilizer WITHOUT weed killer from Blain's Farm and Fleet or Minards. I spread it at about 1/2 the rate they recommend every 6 weeks or so, all thought I will give the lawn a healthy amount of fertilizer going into winter. Now if only I could only figure out how to keep the neighbor's Clover, Dandelions, Creeping Charley and Crabgrass out of my yard! BTW; I'm on my own 600' deep well so needless to say, I don't water the grass. Edited July 5, 2021 by ronhatch
