dalez 139 #1 Posted June 6, 2021 Jumps out of gear when going downhill and using transmission to hold back tractor. Cleaned the inside when I got it and nothing slapped me in the face as being wrong when I had it apart. Not that I would spot anything except maybe a broken part. Any idea what I'm looking at or where to start. Thanks
Pullstart 66,595 #2 Posted June 6, 2021 Let’s get a baseline. What gear are you in? Any gear? Third gear? (Most common) only down hill, or what about up hill with a heavy load?
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #3 Posted June 6, 2021 I have the same issue up and down hill with my

Low range 2nd gear. May do it in other gears but haven't tried to test it. Uphill no.
Pullstart 66,595 #5 Posted June 6, 2021 Have you made sure the gear shift lever is all the way in gear? I wonder if moving down hill it is matching the engine rpms with transmission speed and it wants to detent back to neutral? What kind of shape is your fluid in? What kind of shape is your fluid in? This kinda makes some sense. Like shifting without a clutch when you match the rpm with the tranny. Fluid is new.
stevasaurus 23,274 #7 Posted June 6, 2021 Pullstart is on to what is happening. We are talking a 1/4" ball bearing in a groove in a shift rail holding back 400 to 500 lbs of horse plus about 200 lbs of human with a belt drive. Popping out of any gear is going to happen. Question is, is it popping out of low range or is the trans popping out of 2nd gear. Going down hill is dangerous, try going up in 1st gear. If it goes up hill OK...the détente balls are the issue. It is possible that they are worn a little, it could also be a weak détente spring. Even if you change out those items, you still may have the same problem.
