barns1 57 #1 Posted June 3, 2021 Hi All, Just picked up another Horse, C160 Auto and I need to buy a good quality carb for the 16hp Kohler. I've searched and searched but I can't remember the name of the supplier I've used before. Any suggestions? Thanks

ebinmaine 72,601 #3 Posted June 4, 2021 But first..... Why do you need another carb? Yours rebuildable?
barns1 57 #4 Posted June 4, 2021 (edited) It's the wrong carb, looks like it might have come off a Power King or similar. The C160 is a fixer upper I came across, just a few things missing, trying to make it right. Thanks by the way for A to Z. barns1 57 #11 Posted June 4, 2021 (edited) I searched and checked around and it seems new carbs are discontinued. A to Z didn't have a carb for the 16hp Kohler, thought maybe I could get a used one and rebuild it. So I went with I save tractors as they do come with brass floats, etc. Hopefully it will work out, at least I will have something to get the tractor running correctly. pacer 3,177 #12 Posted June 4, 2021 Carbs have seemingly entered into the love/hate groupings of -- what oil/what paint/filter, etc. New Import or rebuild?? My personal experience is - I'll pay the under $20 for an import. I've bought maybe 6-8 of them and aside from having to change the choke shaft, I had one that I couldnt get the float to seal off. On another it didnt have the ... anti-slosh gasket? and fuel would 'slosh' into the intake and burp out a big puff of black smoke and stumble -- I added the 'anti slosh' gasket and stopped that. As for rebuild I never had much luck with that.... the brass piece that the main adjuster screws into is almost impossible to get out, and on the couple that I did get out it was clogged. And all too often after a cleaning, I still have a crappy running engine.
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #13 Posted June 4, 2021 The last Chinese carb l got l went to adjust the float and the part were the pin goes thru broke off from the plastic float! Junk

I forget the socket size but buy a cheapie and ground down the sides to make the walls thinner.

That sounds like for getting the needle seat out and yes I did the same thing -- took an old deep 3/8 socket 1/4 drive and ground the sides till it would get that little booger out!! The part I was referring too takes a flat blade screwdriver and it has about 4-5 rows of thread exposed and they get corroded along with it just being plain STUCK! squonk 43,784 #16 Posted June 4, 2021 Oh ok Now I know what you talking about. Takes a good non worn screwdriver to get that out. And also a prayer
pacer 3,177 #17 Posted June 4, 2021 Since this part of the carb is/was being discussed, it just might be that some of you arent aware its in there. When you put the bowl on using that 9/16" nut to snug the bowl up, the part that that bolt screws into, sort of tube like has a brass piece inside that the metering screw goes thru and its threaded in. It can, and will get corrosion/gunk in it and while a good blast of carb cleaner will usually clear it out, not always and needs to be screwed/backed out to get it clean --- and its usually stuck!! biged77 113 #18 Posted June 5, 2021 The mainland Chinese carbs are in the $10-$20 range. The Taiwan carbs from Isavetractors are in the $60 range. Although I have not used either one, preferring to rebuild the original carbs, Taiwan products are typically higher quality in my experience.
953 nut 59,912 #19 Posted June 5, 2021 Biggest problem I've found with the Chinese knock-off carbs it that they are advertised as 10-12-14-16 HP. they are jetted for the larger displacement engines and generally will work OK on the 14-16 HP engine but can't be adjusted to work well on the 10-12. One size doesn't fit all. I pulled the jets and brass float out of an old Carter and made it work fine in a 12.
wallfish 18,086 #20 Posted June 6, 2021 Had a damaged carb on a K532 20hp. No choice but a new carb as someone cranked that bowl bolt so tight it cracked the cast. Bought a new one from Isavetractors and it worked out great. So far so good. I've had some flooding issues with a couple of the chinese carbs for Kohlers but haven't had a problem with Teccy snow blower carbs.
