D-250 repower

I searched for stuff, but nothing ever seems to have been completed. But my 250 runs great, trans makes noise, but everything works as it should, just it doesn't have the power it should, for a 4 cylinder engine. I have a roller that weighs close to a 1000lbs, and whenever I pull the very small incline it just looses power. High range, 2nd gear. I can hold it wide open and still looses power. I hook the roller to my 520-8, 2nd gear, maybe 1/4 throttle or touch more, it pulls same hill without even thinking about it. Since the scarcity of parts for the 250/R4 motor, looking at swapping a 3 cylinder diesel into it. I found a Yanmar that's roughly 18 horse, but it's the torque I want. My other 520H has a one lunge 10 horse diesel and will outpull either of the other two, prolly together. The motor is pretty small in the 250, and at work we have a 4 cylinder motor, doesn't look much bigger, so I'm thinking the 3cyl would fit. Crappy part is have to mount it backwards, cause the diesel spins opposite the gas. I plan on swapping the rear out for a hydro unit from a JD318. Anybody ever compare the size of the motors to something else? I like the tractor, but it's pretty much useless until it gets some power. Ultimately want to put a loader on it, maybe a backhoe later down the road...I need to post some pics of the thing lol.

May sound like a dumb question but have you ever tried running it with the muffler removed?

They run good with a restricted exhaust but have no power.

I thought about it. Muffler is in good shape, but have a parts engine with the manifold and rest cut off. I might try that. I found an engine I think would be perfect, just need to get it. Then wait till mud dries out in garage, so I can get concrete and get something done!!!

Preface this with I know nothing of these beasts....if the motor runs well I’d suspect the transmission.

D-250 uses a 10-speed manual transmission.

I put a new muffler on, turned distributor lil bit, but don't really notice a difference. I took it out last nite, and went to park it, it would struggle to move going forward. Reverse was fine. Looks like gonna be swapping in the 318 hydro trans sooner than I thought. Am picking up the new power plant for it today tho, 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel. Hair dryer once it's in a running.....:happy-partydance:

Clutch is fine, doesn’t slip at all. Prolly a combination of things, motor tired, trans binding or something and weighs 1200lbs. Got the diesel, it’s smaller than the 4 banger in it now! Twice the weight prolly but 4 times the torque. Also gave me turbo, needs a seal as it drips out the exhaust. I get home and it’s raining. All weekend. Again.
