1985 314-8 "Gold" Hood Ornament/ Badge

Recommended Posts

Just acquired a 1985 314-8 yesterday in good condition.  Spent six hours straight "going through it".  I'm sure you know what I mean.  One detail that bugs me, is the gold hood badge on the front.  Here's a couple images I found of similar ornamentation:

I really don't care for it, but these images prove it's not just somebody's idea of customizing their machine.  The decals on the side have a gold coloring in the font as well.  These are images of the actual tractor purchased:

So, does anyone know the significance of this gold coloring?  This is near the 40 year anniversary mark, so maybe it's related to that. What's your opinion of this gaudy "bling"?

Welcome to Red Square.

I suspect your tractor is a 1996 model 73402 with a serial number 6900001-6999999

I have the 416-8 version of this machine, I think the general consensus was that it was an anniversary machine. You would have thought the anniversary itself would have been mentioned in the logo.

Good Lord, you guys are up early, and it's VERY nice of you to reply so quickly!  I didn't finish working on her till close to 9:00PM, with no breaks for lunch or dinner.  Totally whipped!  Went to bed at 9:15 exhausted.  Woke up at around 2:00AM, hydrated, and couldn't sleep, so I came here.  I had an account under "Ornery" from about 15 years ago, but couldn't remember the password or email used for it.  Only three posts, no doubt about my 111-5, which has been sold, and replaced with 1975, 48" Bunton walk behind.

I had purchased a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis Ultimate Edition, white with black mock top.  It also had gaudy gold badging on it, which I removed and replaced with normal chrome badges.  I figured I'd do the same with this tractor, but maybe I shouldn't.  It's still all original, with a few jury-rigged repairs here and there, which I'm sorting out.  Obviously, this particular anniversary edition isn't well known, let alone sought after.  Changing the badge and decals might not hurt its value, as if I'd sell it anyway.  Wouldn't mind alleviating the damn Toro logo while I'm at it!

This is my one, not working at the moment though as I can't get it to start - just dead at the key.

Hey Dan,  yours looks decent.  My emblem isn't blacked out in the background, and the side decals are faded.  Least of my worries at this point.  Just cut the back yard, and it's easy to hear the spindle bearings are in need of replacement.  Also, I need to dive into the deck manual.  I have the deck at its highest setting, and that's not as high as I'd like.

Do all of your LED's light up when tested?  Man, that's a LOT of interlocks!  In a pinch you should be able to jump the relay to start it... I think.  Guess I'll be diving into that nest of wires at some point.

Yeah all the LED's light up,and all are off when I try to start it. It has started on the odd occasion but has had this problem since I brought it, just never had the time to sort it so I normally grab my C125 instead. Its a nuisance as its a lovely machine when it does start!

Bummer.  That would grate on my mind till I figured it out.  And, if I purchased it new, and it cropped up under warrantee, the dealer would have a project until it was right.  Is there a circuit board in that mess?  The wiring diagram I have doesn't show a circuit board.  It also doesn't show how those LED's are wired in.  But, it does mention the PTO has to be off, and driver in seat for it to give power to the ignition switch.  Mine has a new seat and seat switch is MIA.  Make sure your seat switch is being closed.  Put a shim between the seat and the switch, or press it by hand.  Might be tuff to do that, since the clutch also needs to be depressed.

I just pulled the spindles out of mine.  Punched the bearings out and I'm befuddled at how the grease gets to the bearings via the zirc fitting on top of the shaft.  All bearings had seal removed from one side, and all had grease in them.  Crazy engineering there, but it seems to work.  Oh, and the bearings are metric!  WTF?  They are trade number 6203, 17x40x12 mm.  The nuts on each side are SAE as far as the sockets used to remove them.  I assume the threads are as well, but I don't know for certain.  I'll be damn sure not to lose any of them, just in case!

clueless

When your looking for parts manual, owner manual, and wiring diagram, look for 1996 314-8, the one in your pics is not a 1985.

gwest_ca- and clueless are exactly right.  Model is 73402, S/N 6900326.  This is what I was going by:

So, you guys know more about this machine than the nice fellow who sold it to me!   As it turned out, he was not the original owner.  But, he did give me the original manuals for the tractor and mower deck, minus sale's receipts.  Guess this helps explain the condition.  It's actually only 25 years old, and it's a 50th Anniversary edition! :occasion-partyblower:  Not to worry, I'll stay my humble self :)

The guys on here are amazing at identifying these machines - stick around as its a great forum, and the information sharing is second to none.

You have a decent looking anniversary model. Don't mess it up. They are more sought after, and if you don't like it, I'll gladly help you get rid of it. Then you can go buy an older ting ;-)

To go along with that badge, I think Glenn Petit modeled his keychains after that logo, sure looks a close match!

Hah!  I'd have shaved the badge and purchased new decals for a 40 year anniversary model, but a 50th Anniversary icon is a Horse of a different color! :)

As soon as I get it tweaked to 50th Anniversary standards, it's going to my son.  It will be replacing a Deutz-Allis we brought back from the dead.   And will be for sale.  God only knows how many hours on it, but I have a LOT of hours in it.

If you wonder where you get parts for such an obscure animal, look no further than a Simplicity 4212 H, which is exactly what it is.

I'm very interested in a gold Wheel Horse 3D keychain.  Hook me up!

Those can be found under Glenns section under classified, vendors. He has a variety of colors molded in a rubber.

I do keyfobs but they are 3d printed in solid plastic, are fully 3d (both sides 3d) and could be printed in "gold" or painted.
