Welcome to the forum.

If this uses the 6-sided belt are you getting it on correctly?

How old is the belt . It may be stretched and needs replacement .

i have 1989 -- 312-8 with 37 inch side deck --- are you running belt on the inside slot of the p.t.o. drive? if not perhaps that could change belt angle? Just guessing ???

everything is as it should be. this is happening on a newer deck i bought. i compared the original deck to the newer one and noticed a difference in the front idler pullys. will swap out and see if this solves the problem.

Are you using a 6 sided belt and does your mule drive have 2 vee pulleys?  Some 37 inch decks do not use 6 sided belts and consequently have 1 vee pulley and 1 flat pulley on the mule drive. I suppose this could be the issue.

That is correct. Decks using 6-sided belts have vee idlers on the deck.
