hello men,  local guy stops by and asks for wh help. he had a C161 with  the twin briggs 16 hp. only runs on 1 cylinder he says. he says it is a hydro machine.  his son has a wh. not sure what model but, he reports it has a single cylinder kohler engine. the kid wants a hydro so they put the kohler on the old briggs machine with the hydro tranny.   the briggs engine has a larger engine pulley O.D. than the kohler.   the briggs engine pulley has a smaller I.D. than the kohler.  i gave him an engine pulley to try from a hydro wheelhorse that matched the larger O.D. size and had the correct I.D. for the kohler shaft.  he is going to have to find the proper belt size.  so the question is, will this setup spin the hydro properly?  i told him i would ask the group.  thank you in advance for any help.

regards mike in mass.

I'm going to throw out my answer but also leave it open to correction from others. I'm curious to see how this goes...

I'm thinking if you have the same outer diameter pulley going from the Briggs to the Kohler engine you should be fine as long as the RPM band is the same.

Sounds like maybe the Kohler engine came off of a manual transmission machine?

The engine pulley OD is determined by the transmission used - hydro or gear.

The engine pulley ID is determined by the engine used. Small 8hp Kohlers and early 10hp Kohlers have a 1" crankshaft as well as all the B&S engines Wheel Horse used. All others are 1-1/8" ID.

Belt may be the same. Early are 1/2" wide and later 5/8" wide. Engine mounted on the frame and one on a shaker plate may be different length but not much.

Here, I have to get all my pulley's custom made. We don't find any pulleys in the hardware-store.

Hydros have a bigger (OD) engine pulley then the manual trans.

I have also noticed a difference in OD trans pulley sizes between a raider (smaller od) and a 312 (bigger)
