Recommended Posts

mowerman1193

Last year I picked up a tow behind Wheel Horse drop seeder at a garage sale..This would be about a mid 1980's model..Has anyone ever seen or heard of one..I didn't get any paper work with it but the guy I got it from bought it to seed his small yard and never used it again..It looks new..Just trying to find some info on it and maybe how to use the settings..It has a tag and I used the numbers on Toros site but came up empty..I thought I had some pictures on my PC but I guess I removed them..I will take some more or if I find them I will post them if I can figure out how to post pics..

The first Horse I ever rode was Grandpop's 550.

I don't know if he bought it at the same time or not, but he had a drop spreader that was green except for the metal assembly that attached to the Slot hitch. This metal assembly was identical to the piece that was on the WheelHorse cart.

I do recall one summer liming a couple of acres of well sloped land and having a great time. I think it was at that time that I figured out how to shift on the fly.

Grandpop's 550 did not have a drawbar, just the slot hitch. In fact it did not have the parts to connect the lift to the slot hitch, it was just an alternate way to hook up the two attachments he owned.

I never noticed a part number on it, so I don't know for sure it was a Wheel Horse product. Until I saw a picture of a green spreader in some lit somewhere I had always assumed the dealer had made it for him.

Excellent find. :omg: I see that the Toro site lists three of them: FS-36, FS-363, and FS-365, all from the early/mid sixties. Somehow the decal looks newer than that.

BINGO!

The FS-36 spreader and others from that early 60's series were built by Scotts. And they were dark green with just a WH decal on them to identify them. I have one from the 1960-ish year.

Most all of the pull-behind implements (wagons, spreaders, aerators, etc) were built by subcontractors for WH. Probably just wasn't economical to make everything under the same roof on Ireland Road.

That's a beautiful spreader. NICE find! I remember seeing them at the dealership back in 1987 when dad bought his tractor. My next door neighbor actually has the Lambert model sitting in the woods between our houses with a broken wheel. Very stout unit.

Wanna sell it? :omg:

Steve,

Since you mentioned it, who were some of the other manufactorers who made these implements (Ohio Steel, Agrifab?) :omg:

I am not Steve but,

Last year I talked to my local dealer about this seeder and he said that Brinly and Ohio Steel was used for most all of the seeders from the 1980's anyway..

Thanks guys, I ask only because I picked up an original 60s Ohio Steel dump trailer that is the perfect proportions for my 753 and is as close to WH red that you can get without being a WH.

There's a very interesting set of listings on eBay right now for Wheel Horse attachment manuals that shows who made the implements for Wheel Horse. I wish I'd come across these sooner to bring them to folks' attention, as there's less than a day left in the auctions. If anyone cares to look, search "Wheel Horse" in all categories, then sort by "Ending soonest". That will group them together.
