What engine do I have.

Recommended Posts

Good evening,

I recently I picked up a 418-8 wheel horse tractor. It needs the engine (18 HP 2 cylinder) rebuilt. I  have searched for parts by using the model# on the engine (M18QS spes# 24510 Sn.# 1625110676. No results. Some parts supplier wanted to know what series the engine was. I don't know. I appreciate any help on this subject.

Thanks Travis

Welcome to Red Square

You have a Magnum18 Twin.  The supplier is thinking it is a KT17 twin which came in a Series 1 and Series 2.  The magnum 18 is almost the same as a KT17 Series two when it comes to internal parts. But there are differences.  Parts are not as available for this engine as other Kohlers I am rebuilding mine right now.  I am waiting on the machine shop to tell me how far over I need on Piston and rings.  Rods i need .010 over.  Valves will also be on the hunting list.  I am guessing that the rebuild cost in parts and Machine shop for grinding and valves will be around $700...probably more.  I have started a thread on the project.  i have done some singles but the twin is a different and more difficult animal.  Check Pat's Small Engine website for some of parts available http://www.psep.biz/store/kohler_rebuild_kits.htm.  They do not have many oversize parts.  Also Brian miller has some parts.  http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/catalog.htm

Are you pllanning on doing eh work yourself???

You all are the best. With your help I am able to find the parts diagram for this engine. I searched by using M18-24510 with good results. Again thanks. Pictures later.
