Dave stanke 1 #1 Posted March 28, 2021 I just overhauled my 1995 416 with a p216 onan put I together and the starter engages with the key in the on position and won’t disengage until the key is turned off. What did I do wrong? Engine will fire but starter won’t disengage. Hopefully I’m not the only one that’s had this problem and some can help. Any advice will be appreciated
seuadr 489 #2 Posted March 28, 2021 Well, you got pretty much two things to check - the solenoid or the switch. Unhook the starter (so you don't cook it) and measure the voltage on the lead to the starter when you push the key to "start" you should see 12v, and when you let go, 0 v. If you still see 12v either the contacts are bad or it is hooked up wrong most likely. If you have a constant 12v, first disconnect both wires and measure the resistance across the smaller poles, they should read OL if they don't they are stuck. If they do, review the wiring and make sure they are coming in the right side. 1

953 nut 59,914 #4 Posted March 28, 2021 Best recheck the wiring on your ignition switch, sounds like the wires to the "S" (start) and "I" (ignition) got crossed up.
