Steering Wheel Removal??

Recommended Posts

Raider12

This steering wheel has NEVER been off this tractor. Just looking at does not look good. Anyone have any success in removing one? Im planning on a ground restoration this coming fall and I like to plan ahead!

I bought the 12 ton press from Harbor Frieght for removing mine from the C-195 and for future projects. I took the steering wheel off with the hoodstand still attached, removed the one piece plate on the press since I couldn't get the steering wheel in between the plate and used 2 pieces of angle iron. put the steering wheel in between them, clamped the angle iron together, and applied pressure. Boy did it apply pressure! I had it soaking in PB Blaster for awhile before I started...left it for awhile...still no movement. Took it out and hit the bottom of the steering shaft and put it back in the press, and applied more pressure and bam, it broke free! Others will have other ways to remove them, but this worked for me.

I had the same problem with my Raider 12 and a press would not budge it. I cut the steering shaft and chucked the steering wheel up in a manual lathe and drilled the cut off part out. If you have a lathe you can use at work or elsewhere. My steering wheel had a round chunck of steel that was on the bottom of the center making it easy to chuck up. Then I just replaced the 3/4 shaft by cutting the steering gear just below the weld on a band saw and re-welding the new 3/4 steering shaft to it. After all this I placed enough grease under the center cap that it will never happen again while I have it. Hope this helps if a press wont help.

Thanks,

Gene :omg:

Gene reminded me...I restored a C-145 YEARS ago and could not get the wheel off. I cut the shaft below the hoodstand, restored the tractor, then when I went to put it back together, used a sleeve that fit over the steering shaft and drilled a hole in each shaft half and bolted the shafts together with the sleeve....still works great. Just another idea.....

I like that idea also, I never thought of that :omg: I'll have to keep that in mind next time...

Thanks,

Cutting the shaft and using a sleeve was an idea I had kicked around too. I do have a nice press that I will give a try first. Thanks for everyone in put! :omg:
