Starter noise

Has anyone experienced starter motor trouble where it sounds like its trying to engage with the flywheel teeth it eventually does and starts the engine.
But the noise it makes is horrible and could eventually perhaps cause damage to either the pinion or flywheel.

Is there a way you could upload a video of the noise and action to YouTube and share it here?

What kind of engine??

if it is a Kohler, chances are that your starter drive is getting bad,

If it is a Briggs, then the plastic gear on the starter drive is stripped out.

I wish the Magnum motors had an easier access to the starters!  The Bendix head on those starters seems to get noisy or does not engage well more than most of my Kohlers.  I have to take off the front motor tin to place graphite on the Bendix.  Not an easy job!

My guess is the bearing/bush at the Bendix end of the motor badly worn. I've just replace that bush on three motors.

Here is a link to one source for a starter drive, should you need one.

Looking at the flywheel as the key is turned, it sounds like the starter (brushes or armature?) are dirty or weak or worn.

Side note, that sure is a nice paint job!

Actually a bit embarrassing I took the engine cover off and watched the starter motor in action and straight away realised I had put the coil bracket on behind the motor instead of in front. Turned it around and starter worked perfectly.

what threw me was the starter motor bracket had recesses which looked like they would take the fixing bolts !

Thanks to everyone for their help and assistance. Still learning !!
Thanks for the compliment on the paintwork.
