Handy Don 13,687 #2 Posted March 15, 2021 Welcome to the forum. Lots of different tractors, models, gauges, etc. Please help us out with the model/serial number of your tractor and pictures of the wiring so we can be on the same page as you!

Achto 29,237 #4 Posted March 15, 2021 (edited) 35 minutes ago, JJ Barnett said: I know where the positive goes... what goes on the negative post Are you working with a Kohler engine? It sounds like a stator charging system, given the fact that you are speaking of 3 wires. If this is so, here are your options. If your regulator has three prongs in a row. The two wires coming from behind the engine shroud ( I assume the two blacks) go on the outside terminals of the regulator. Does not matter which goes to which. The middle term will go to the switch ( I assume Yellow) and only have power with the switch in the on position. If you have two terminals on top and one on the bottom. Then the two blacks go to the top terminals and the yellow to the bottom terminal. If you have a starter/generator model. A wire will go from the "A" terminal on the starter/gen to the terminal under the regulator. A wire will go from the "F" term on the starter gen to the "F" or "Gen" terminal on the regulator. Last a wire will go from the "B" or "Bat" terminal on the regulator to a key switch terminal that only has power with the switch in the "On" position. All of these regulators are grounded through their bodies. So they must be bolted down in order work. Edited March 15, 2021 by Achto
Ed Kennell 41,396 #5 Posted March 15, 2021 is this a 520 Wheel Horse with the Onan P220 engine?
953 nut 59,271 #6 Posted March 15, 2021 Those ground wires were probably all placed on the negative post to create a junction point for other meters. Have you verified the apparent high voltage with another meter?
lynnmor 7,719 #7 Posted March 15, 2021 Welcome! You should download the correct manuals on this site, they are free. There is a Demystification Guide that can be helpful. Also, download the engine manual that you need. Armed with all that information, we can better help you.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #8 Posted March 16, 2021 Wiring diagrams. Click on the pictures for more or download. The 2 blacks go on the (-) negative terminal. They do it this way to join the blacks together as one is for the voltmeter and the other is likely for another gauge that requires grounding. A pink should go on the (+) positive terminal. There is an illustration of the back of the voltmeter in the 2nd link. Garry
Jeff-C175 7,206 #9 Posted March 16, 2021 JJ you really need to tell the guys exactly what tractor and engine you have. They're GUESSING and that's not doing you any good at all. @JJ Barnett
