Many of us will not install balance gears (grenade gears) when rebuilding an engine. If you choose to install the balance gears you should put in the replacement bearing set for them.

I took the ballast gears out of all my 

kohlers. They make great paperweights!

:ROTF: I really didn't notice much of a difference since I've had them out.

OK I was going to make a separate post but ... There is a noticeable difference with out the balance gears.  I have done two engines now a 301 and 321 and left out the balance gears.  you can feel a vibration in them not noticeable in their unmolested cousins..    as far as setting them follow the manual it isn't easy but next one i am putting them in.....
