over charging

I have been messing with this thing off and on for over a year, still don't know what is exactly wrong with it, but I have part of the problem narrowed down, just not sure how to fix, when the battery is hooked up and key off there is a 13 volt drain on the battery (I removed the ground cable and installed volt meter between cable and battery, if I disconnect the two yellow wires coming from my magneto, the drain is eliminated, this model does not have a voltage regulator, but if I'm understanding correctly, it is suppose to have diodes to convert the ac voltage to dc voltage, but i cannot find them. Is it possible they corroded and the last owner cut them out of the wiring harness and that is why it is over charging. Is it possible to wire up a voltage regulator on a model like this?

Follow the ignition wire and charge wire to the engine and there should be a connector there where the tractor wires and engine wires are plugged together. On the engine side of the connector the charge wire should have a diode in it. Most likely covered with tape to protect the diode. Squeeze the tape and see if you can feel the 3/16" diameter x 3/8" long diode.

:text-yeahthat: Your stator will produce AC voltage. The diode will convert this to DC voltage. The diode should also help to prevent back feed from the battery to the stator.

I would think that the charging wire would be connected to the ignition switch, so that it is only connected to the battery when in the run position.

The 2 yellow wires coming from the magneto should really be 1 yellow and one white. You should not have a magneto if the engine is original. The yellow powers the + ignition coil and the white wire will have the diode for charging the battery. The green wire goes to only the lights.

Sorry you are having this problem but glad you found us. If you remove the 15 amp fuse on the small red wire from the solenoid to the wiring harness does the meter still show a drain?

It could be a problem with some of the insulation on the wires being chafed. Gently move these wires at different points while watching the meter, if the voltage goes away you have found the bad insulation.
