Work Horse GT1642 PTO Clutch??

Recommended Posts

mowerman1193

Hello Everyone,

First time poster, but long time lurker, LOL

I have a bad outer bearing in my GT1642 PTO. Took it apart the other night and seen the PTO clutch disc is worn down and just starting to hit the rivets. Also the inner needle bearing did not have much grease but I think the bearing is still ok..just wondering how would be the best way to grease that one? Also a few years back over on the Yahoo groups I read something about being able to just change the clutch facing rather than replacing the whole disc..I assume this would have to be a glue/ bonded type of fix..I have never tried this before..Also can you still get just the clutch facing? I looked up in the Toro parts look up but I do not see anything other than the whole disc..

Any tips or suggestions would be great for helping me rebuild my PTO..

Thank You,

Kevin ( mowerman1193 )

I don't have answers to most of your questions, but when I have needed to replace the clutch facing, I found it simpler to find a used/good shape clutch and replace that. I put some grease on the needle bearings with my finger, but I did not use it liberally- I don't imagine you want too much, or it will find its way to the clutch. I have used the B-80 for years since replacing the clutch, and it still works great, and the bearings are fine.

I once needed to replace the clutch plate on my 414-8,i found a place that would do a small job like this,he quoted me 80 dollars,so i purchased a used pto from curly a red square member and a really good guy to deal with, even with shipping to canada it was way cheaper and i got an extra pto,a new clutch plate was 90 dollars canadian.

Thanks for all the tips so far..

I have done some more research and found the facing online..Problem is there is two different ones and I do not know what one is the one I need..One cost $21.89 and the other is $25.61..

I also found out that I can get the rivet type and just drill out my rivets and then rivet the new facing onto the disc..Now maybe the 2 facings I found one may be a bonded type and the other maybe the rivet type..I will have to do more research I guess..

I just thought someone on these Wheel Horse sites would know something other than buying used ones..My issue with that is they are hard to find without buying the whole pulley and everything..And they seem to cost as much as the new facing..I don't need any more clutch pullies laying around..

I think I paid $10 for the one I bought, and the surface was like new.

I'm going to try and not sound like a total... well you get the idea

The members who have posted have given you good advice... Buy New, Get yours Refaced, or buy used. there is no fourth option here, and calling out the members of this, or any other forum for not giving you a magical answer isnt going to help...

With that being said, :omg: and good luck getting your clutch issue sorted out!

Sorry I didn't intend to make my post sound like that..I just thought for sure someone had refaced their own before thats all..

If I was to buy a used one it would cost me as much as a new one by the time I put fuel in my truck..I don't like buying something without seeing it in person..My local salvage yard is 50 mile each way and sure he would probably get at least $10 for a good one..

I am just going to stop and ask my local Toro dealer I pass on my way to work every day about the refacing..Refacing just seems the way to go for a new one at about $25 with the rivets..

Anyway, Thanks again for your efforts and Again Sorry I sounded like a grumpy old man,

I can only speak for myself, but I was not offended by what you are requesting, I am just sharing what I found to be the most logical solution for myself. There are folks on here in the past who have resurfaced their clutches, and with different materials. While I don't remember what and how, I do know that if you spend the time searching past posts, you may come across this info. It is possible. I myself am resolved to keeping my tractors going with what is readily available, since each day these parts, especially new stuff, gets more scarce. That being said, you solve it how it suits you- you just will get more advice from those who have found it simpler to replace the clutch.

Welcome, and keep asking. You're not the only one who can sound grumpy, and there is a lot of forgiveness to go around. I've needed my share. I have had a string of giving info without either reading all the details first, or just simply having brain farts. Either way, we will help you the best way we each know how.

You may want to pm TT. I believe he had a source for clutch facing.
