Starter number help

Recommended Posts

spark949

I have a 77 C-160 that the starter has gone bad on.  The motor is a K341S on the label serial number 7467510 . I see multiple starters listed but most say 1985-1987 10.12,14 HP which look like the same starter. If I look at the starters with the numbers listed fir that motor, they are not the same as the one I took off.
anyone know the proper stater fir this motor? Thanks

Have you disassembled the existing starter to verify the issue?

You may be better off rebuilding your own.

Could be something simple like a worn bushing causing it to bind.

Agree with Eric. May just need a good cleaning. Blow it out good with compressed  air...

This thread may help.  This starter was on a 10 hp Kohler.  It is called a "High Mount" starter.  Yours may be very similar, and this thread helpful.

I just replaced the starter on my 76 C-160. The engine is not original. It is an unknown year. I had to replace the starter on the original engine and got one off of a 74 C-160 parts tractor. It bolted right up and worked well.

The replacement engine came with a starter so I took off the one I put on the original one and put it back on the shelf.

Today I put that shelved starter back on and it fits perfect and starts nice. There was a sticker on the starter I installed: Johnson Electric 4509809

That is a Kohler number. Chances are the starter you were looking at will work fine.

Back in 1996, I had to replace the starter on my B-100 (K-241). The dealer sold me a K-341 starter. He said that the fit was the same. Only difference was this starter had a 13 tooth gear vs. a 10 tooth gear. The 13 tooth would turn my engine over faster than the 10 tooth.

If you need to replace your starter, there are many available on venues like Amazon or eBay for under $50.00. Just be sure to get a 13 tooth for your K-341.

I bought one on Amazon.....of course it got lost. Had to order another one from a different supplier and that was “delayed “ somewhere out in the world.  Finally came, 5 minute install, starts like a champ but it does sound like a 60s whiny dodge starter.  The one I pulled out was completely fubar. Thanks for all the help.
