312-8 Steering

Recommended Posts

Tony in Australia 2

Morning, I am trying to replace the steering collar behind the battery, which end is the easiest to get off?  The cutout for the flat sided collar is worn, as is the collar inside diametre. I have a new collar and pin for the steering wheel.

Thanks for your anyways spot on and helpful guidance.

Cheers  Your friend from down under 'Tony in Australia'

You have to remove the steering wheel to get it apart the gear is welded on the other end. My 312-8 was so rusted I could not get the roll pin out. ended up cutting the shaft into.

I also replaced the bushing with a flange bearing bolted to the hood stand.  I used a 3" long sleeve to put the shaft back together welded it to the bottom half and drilled bolted the top with a 1/4" bolt.

tony , had very good success with mounting a two bolt 3/4" flange bearing to that very issue ,  you could use this source picture info    https://www.google.com/search?q=wheel+horse+plow+mounting+pictures&sxsrf=ALeKk03-7j__UJ_oqAfUwXSz1dzLpxammQ:1613264950728&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=G4KXt2KuoOlPcM%2CRSrn8EFvILzCCM%2C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kSUoweHu249XXS4F-Odb6JeegDc3A&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjz0MOimOjuAhUKUt8KHRf5AtwQ9QF6BAgOEAE#imgrc=G4KXt2KuoOlPcM , have them on my 3 horses, pete

Lee and Peter, thanks both of you for the reply, I was able to get the roll pin out but can't work the steering wheel off yet. Got a new bush and I was thinking of making a collar support to make the hole in the plate smaller to stop movement. I'll keep trying to get the steering wheel off, I would use a puller but being plastic and all that could end in a disaster, steering wheel in more then one piece. I am trying to get this old girl read for sale.

Peter thanks for the link to the photos very interesting, I still haven't worked how to put up pictures yet.

Thank again for the great help. Tony

You may be able to rent or borrow a Bearing Splitter to remove the steering wheel.

I have also resorted to cutting the shaft on several tractors.  Re build the upper bearing support, then put it back together with a sleeve exactly as Lee describes.   This makes it easy to take apart for future repairs and if you use a longer connecting sleeve you can adjust the height of the steering wheel to fit the operator.

tony, sorry about my screw up on the frame site I sent you , what I was trying to send was this flange bearing site , https://www.amazon.com/s?k=2+bolt+bearing+3%2F4&gclid=CjwKCAiAsaOBBhA4EiwAo0_AnHsuf3gGAHbEEa_7hPDusARmXBnuHGGooGn0vjZYeS0ldHS_KwMiyRoCnOQQAvD_BwE&hvadid=490232474563&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9003307&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=13050260530948779449&hvtargid=kwd-1139802097161&hydadcr=7554_11323098&tag=googhydr-20&ref=pd_sl_62l2j6689k_e, look at the 2 bolt 3/4" flange bearing, I  have those on my 3 horses , bolt it right in place of the existing bronze unit. it strengthened the entire column area off  the bolt on area , worth a look , pete

Pete, do you know which bearing you are using.      There are quite a few listed in that link.

Peter, the link you first sent will be good later on down my wheel horse journey, and the other Amazon site is good to know. Thanks team for the help once again. I would be interested to know many and which models of wheel horse were dhipped downunder. I've only seen 3 and I own two of them.

Cheers and stay safe team
