pfrederi 17,147 #1 Posted January 3, 2021 The head shroud on the K301(breakerless Ignition) I am working on has a sticker I have not run across before. It is a warning to not disconnect the spark plug wire while running or the ignition coil may permanently damaged. Don't recall seeing one before or any similar warning in service manual.
ebinmaine 63,137 #2 Posted January 3, 2021 Don't have one on the top of the Charger 12 but it's VERY surface rusted. I have another breaker less 12 in the shed I can check later.
JohnD 145 #3 Posted January 7, 2021 I ran a compression check a while back and was going to short the plug wires to the chassis but then got distracted and forgot. After I finished the test and reconnected everything my KT-17 wouldn't start. That's when I realized the coil was hotter than the rest of the engine. I expect it was dissipating the spark voltage in the coil case because there was nowhere else for it to go. I figured I toasted the coil, but after it cooled back down everything ran properly again. Next time I'll either make sure to short the plug wires or disconnect the wire from the points.
