New Motor, Wrong Holes

Recommended Posts

Have a Lawn Ranger I'm putting a Wisconsin engine into, but am running into a hole problem.

Holes on the frame (from the Tecumseh mounting plate) measure 7-1/2" x 5" (same as a K181).

Holes on my Wisconsin are 7-1/2" x 4".

One side, the holes line up fine (and are the same size diameter). On the other side, the holes in the frame are offset 1" from the holes on the motor.

If I drill new holes in the frame, the holes will be half-on, half-off the angle iron frame. I could do that, and add a plate underneath to "sandwich" the frame in place. Obviously, that would work and would keep it plenty strong for my needs (fun lawn toy, not a worker).

I was trying to figure out a way to mount the motor without drilling new holes. I came up with 2 ideas.

1.) Use some kind of "J" shaped bolt, the short leg of the "J" would go into the hole on the motor, and the long leg would go through the frame with a nut. I may have to alter the short leg to make sure it clamps down properly.

2.) Make an adapter plate. Would need to use studs or counter-sunk screws for the motor mounts.

Problem with #2 is that I am already short on space under the hood, and if I raise the motor any more, it wont fit with the hood on.

Would option #1 work okay? If it didn't, I really wouldn't be out much (other than the cost of the "J" bolts", and I could always revert back to drilling the frame.

What about welding two of these on the off side. Then use washers under the other side to make the space even.

This sounds like the best way to go.              :twocents-02cents:

Here's another idea I just came up with. Make 2 of these "clip" things and bolt them on as sketched.

Do you have a welder? If so how about welding a couple of small 1/4” thick tabs, or one longer strip along the inside of the frame rail. Then drill the required holes? The longer strip maybe the best option, you can omit weld from the areas where the holes will be to make drilling easier.

I have used the J bolt thing on a 12HP Kohler engine that did not have the drilled holes in the sump plate. A little opposite of what you are doing. used the J to wrap around the angle iron leg and through the hole in the engine. Worked great no issues. heated up grade 8 bolts and bent. You have two good holes.
