roadapples 6,984 #2 Posted December 27, 2020 I've got a K&N on the tractor I mow with....
WHNJ701 4,165 #3 Posted December 27, 2020 The 2002 ford ranger I had, I put k&n air filter in, ran like crap, on and off cel for mass air flow, after about 6 months I stuck the fram or whatever paper filters back in and ran great. The mustang has cold air intake with a mac air filter, that responded well

Sarthurs01 975 #5 Posted December 28, 2020 We raced for 20 years from karts to super dirt late models, and we always stressed on clean air! We changed filters and prefilters between every hot lap heat race and feature race. Never once had a motor builder say anything about a dirt issue. We take this to our road cars and tractors too. 1
lynnmor 7,877 #6 Posted December 28, 2020 Studies have been done on K&N air filters, the results showed them to be next to useless. With the dusty environment that tractors operate in, I wouldn't consider using that kind of junk. 2
Howie 899 #7 Posted December 28, 2020 I did an HH100 Tecumseh here a couple of years ago that some one tried to silicone a cardboard disc to the front of the air filter. That cylinder was .015 oversize at the top.
oilwell1415 563 #8 Posted December 28, 2020 Another vote for K&N being junk. They flow lots of air, but after you take one off you can see how much dirt they let past.
Lane Ranger 11,467 #9 Posted December 28, 2020 (edited) The old oil bath air cleaners seemed to do a very good job on the old Kohler and Clinton’s on wheel Horses . The RJ With 4 hp motors and the 1054s with ten hours Kohler lasted a long time with those motors Edited December 28, 2020 by Lane Ranger
tom2p 2,394 #10 Posted December 28, 2020 (edited) some do not use the foam pre-filter - and some do not apply oil to the foam pre-filter regular motor oil can be used on the foam pre-filter - but I use off road motorcycle air filter oil which is sticky / tacky and appears to do a better job of collecting dust I also clean the inside of the air cleaner (air filter housing) and wipe down with motor oil soaked rag or paper towel to better collect dust I apply grease to the sealing surfaces of the air filter element when I install a new filter Edited December 28, 2020 by tom2p
ebinmaine 73,121 #11 Posted December 28, 2020 Interesting thread.... We use stock Kohler air filters checked/cleaned about once a year. No mowing here so not as dusty as some environments.
Maxwell-8 4,367 #12 Posted December 28, 2020 (edited) We can still get NOS Kohler filters, and if you just blow the filters out now and then, your fine. I think project farm copmared some car air filters, and K&N did not perform good in filtration. Oh and stay awway from that chinese stuff Edited December 28, 2020 by Maxwell-

I haven’t bought any filter oil in years, but I need bar oil anyway.
