Worn out K301

Recommended Posts

Maxwell-8

I have a worn out k301. Or i assume it is. Its smoking white like the polar express:occasion-santa:.  It's burning oil, i measured the compression, It's 100 psi, which seems quite high. Is it a worn out bore, or bad valve seals? I can see, it was just rebuild i assume: head was of,piston looked like it hadn't ran. Somebody didn't do a good job rebuilding it then.

Maybe time for a REAL Yanmar Diesel????

Greets from :bflag: and thanks for your responses!

Wonder if the valve clearances are set correctly? .009" In .019 Ex, usually its easier to pull the valve cover off after removing the carb, it might also be a dirty/clogged/ incorrectly put together crankcase breather in the valve cover assembly. Compression reading if cold is not too bad.

:text-thankyoublue:

It's a motor with an open breather, so it isn't connect to the intake, Compression is measured warm, with of course oil on the cylinder wall.

I have to check the valve clearance, but the valves do shut close air tight. How would valves have an effect on high oil consumption?

So It's probably a worn out cylinder wall.:confusion-seeingstars:

maxwell, you could try RISLONE RING SEAL , it sounds like a varnish stuck ring situation .  those piston rings can gum up and cause blow by , from what I have seen , an additive and some hours of run time  add up into a filthy oil drain , showing the solvent cleaning action in the filthy oil , might be worth a try , if it solves your issue , pete

Lots of guys look at a cyl bore, see some cross hatch and think it's good. Every Kohler I've been around with any amount of serious run time was out of round and needed boring. you can try peter's idea or maybe some Seafoam in the oil for a bit but is sounds like it needs some machine work.

Valve guides worn. 1) with valve cover removed 2) with carb removed and valve cover (valve cover/crankcase breather is the same unit) still intact 3) with carb still on. Has nothing to do with air cleaner/breather in carb.

A visual inspection, i don't trust for that reason. I have seen chainsaw with a lot of scoring, but still preform 180PSI of cold compression (which is as much as new) and run perfectly.

Now the Kohler did had some scoring

If i cant get the kohler to run, i will switch to diesel wanted to it for a while, keep the Kohler for an later project, and when i have time, have found all the parts, and founds someone who does machining on those engines.

Now i am wondering a lot which engine: an 400$ chinese diesel or a used Yanmar for 700$

Prices are both cheap to Belgian standards

maxwell 8 , just thought I  would suggest that , since regularly going over to rislone products , my engines run smoother and the crud that was in my engines , has to be gone, the solvent cleaning action quickly breaks down engine varnish , my engines were used , but run and work much better now . pete
