tractormandash 5 #1 Posted December 6, 2020 In August I bought a 1995 416H for winter single stage snow blowing use only in Traverse City Michigan. I'm finding that in cold weather it cranks for about 12 seconds before starting after sitting 10-12 days. I started shutting the fuel off after each use in case there is bleed back but that doesn't help. Once it starts its fine. I also found that if I start it again the next day it starts quicker but find it starts and stalls a couple of times before it stays running. This is my first Onan. My questions are do I need to get used to how Onan's start in the winter? Should I install a marine primer bulb to help the fuel pump? Should I replace the fuel pump? I have an extra Onan one or so the seller said it was. It has new Champions, two new Onan plug wires, new fuel filter, new oem fuel shut off with screen, and new fuel lines. Any help would be great. Racinbob 11,928 #2 Posted December 6, 2020 That's pretty common on the models with the fuel tank under the seat. It's more pronounced in the winter because you likely let the tractor sit idle longer. It was definitely an issue with my 2005 Classic. Now it can sit a long period and when I turn the key on I listen to the whirr of the pump and she fires right up. 1 1
tractormandash 5 #3 Posted December 6, 2020 Nice. What kind of electric fuel pump is that? Thanks for the reply! Jay
Racinbob 11,928 #4 Posted December 6, 2020 It's a Mr. Gasket #42s.
tractormandash 5 #5 Posted December 6, 2020 Has it held up good for you?
Racinbob 11,928 #6 Posted December 6, 2020 So far it's been great. I did previously purchase two of the little cheapies but I decided not to use them. We mow a very large amount and I felt more comfortable with a better unit.
tractormandash 5 #7 Posted December 6, 2020 Awesome. Did it come with install instructions?
Racinbob 11,928 #8 Posted December 6, 2020 (edited) Yes. It really a simple install. The hardest part was deciding were to mount it. The spot I chose was like it was made for it. If I remember right the pump uses 5/16" line, the tractor is 1/4". Hardware store stuff. That 90° fitting is 1/4" x 5/16". The pump comes with a filter that you can see in the picture. tractormandash 5 #9 Posted December 6, 2020 Ok sounds good. Did you wire it right to the battery or go through the ignition switch?
Racinbob 11,928 #10 Posted December 6, 2020 I went to the 'run' position on the switch. When I start it I turn the key only to the run position for a few seconds. You'll hear it running. Then I start it. It sat for extended periods last winter and every time it was instant start. I loved it.
Racinbob 11,928 #11 Posted December 6, 2020 Don't forget to use an inline fuse. I don't remember if it came with one or I added it.
tractormandash 5 #12 Posted December 6, 2020 Ok. It looks like that pump makes three psi and that doesnt sound like that would mess with the needle and seat?
Racinbob 11,928 #13 Posted December 6, 2020 Correct. It's actually rated at 2-3.5psi. No issues at all.

lynnmor 7,815 #15 Posted December 6, 2020 A primer bulb or electric fuel pump will give you near instant starting. As for the shutting off after a cold start, mine works best like this: 1/4 throttle, full choke, start, immediately open choke, when it stutters give the choke a quick jab on and off. Might take one, two or three jabs depending on temperature.
tractormandash 5 #16 Posted December 6, 2020 ok. sounds good thanks. That sounds like where I'm at right now. Again, never owning an Onan this sounds like this may be how they are in cold weather with a vacuum type fuel pump. Once it starts it runs beautifully just trying to eliminate the problem. SylvanLakeWH 28,397 #17 Posted December 6, 2020 I put an in line primer bulb on mine and it works perfectly every time... cheap and quick...
tractormandash 5 #18 Posted December 6, 2020 Awesome. That's what I was leaning toward initially as I have a second new vacuum pump. Mt thought was to try the inline primer bulb then eventually switch to electric fuel pump. Thank you everyone. Jay
